Protect Our Bones: Critical Infrastructure Improvements at the Boonshoft Museum
Protect Our Bones will protect the facility and artifacts, provide significant energy-efficiency with full HVAC replacement and create a new revenue stream with a new cafe—all contribute to museum sustainability. Artifacts, many of them prehistoric bones and significant human remains, will be protected through improved climate control and security. If this is not done, the museum will not be able to maintain their status as a premier museum and the community risks losing this important asset.

Community Details
The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is the premier regional provider of interactive science learning experiences, which enrich the lives of children and adults; enhance the quality of life in our community; and promote a broad understanding of the world. For over 125 years, the greater Dayton community has come together through the Dayton Society of Natural History to preserve the past and educate for the future, sparking an interest in science, exploration, and discovery for generations of Ohioans. In fulfillment of its mission, the museum reaches approximately 200,000 children and adults annually and serves 14,000 students through school groups on field trips.

The Boonshoft Museum has proven in its long history that it can stand the test of time and maintain and present history for us all to learn and enjoy. However, these critical infrastructure updates are needed to protect this community asset for many years to come. Not only do museum visitors rely on the museum, but students from around the state “visit” the museum in person and virtually daily. We must upgrade and protect the bones of the museum to ensure that its contribution to the quality of life in the community continues.
Success measurement is fairly straight forward for this project. Facility repairs (EIFS and roof) will visibly protect the building and the artifacts contained. HVAC replacement and upgrades will immediately demonstrate reduced energy usage, resulting in significantly reduced (and measurable) utility expenses. The kitchen renovation will create a new revenue stream for the museum that can be measured.

The median removal will cut down on unsafe driving outside of the museum, which can be observed (and measured) by the City of Dayton.

If the infrastructure repairs are not realized, staffing cuts could be implemented to offset the cost of needed repairs.
