National Aviation Heritage Area Reauthorization
The National Aviation Heritage Area is the congressional designation of eight Ohio counties promoting and preserving our nation’s aviation heritage. In December 2019, Congress reauthorized NAHA for three years (September 30, 2022). This reauthorization allows NAHA to receive federal funds and carry out its guiding legislation. NAHA will seek reauthorization starting in 2021 as a strategy to partner with 30 other heritage areas including the Ohio & Erie NHA located in northeast Ohio.

Community Details
The National Aviation Heritage Area welcomed 1.4 million visitors in 2019 with an estimated direct economic impact of more than $226 million. In 2020, the Heritage Area was able to pivot to use designated federal funds to support our region’s aviation heritage non-profits during the pandemic. As examples, the Heritage Alliance supported PPE and equipment for WACO Air Museum summer camps, and NAHA financially supported Air Camp curriculum professionals as they pivoted from in-person summer camps to fall programs and virtual teacher trainings. NAHA also used its resources to create an economic recovery marketing campaign upon the reopening of our region’s aviation heritage sites. The Boarding Pass provided discounts and incentives to safely visit our region’s sites. This campaign was recently awarded the Ohio Travel Association’s only state-level award, “The Spirit of Innovation.” Finally, NAHA continues to work with the National Park Service and the City of Dayton at the Wright Factory redevelopment site.

By promoting and preserving our region’s aviation heritage, NAHA is uniquely positioned to provide additional support to our region’s and Ohio’s aviation and aerospace industry and innovation leaders. Data and mapping projects demonstrate a correlation between aviation heritage and current industry. NAHA’s mission to raise the region’s and Ohio’s aviation heritage profile will continue to support Ohio's work to attract and retain aerospace industry and military jobs.
Reauthorization and continued federal funding will result in several outcomes. First, NAHA will continue to serve as the conduit between 15 aviation heritage sites, 5 convention and visitor bureaus, and numerous information partners for cooperative projects and promotions of the region as an aviation heritage tourism destination. Increasing visitation will have a direct economic impact on the region. Secondly, preservation projects will support aviation heritage sites and increase their capacity. Finally, reauthorization sustains NAHA to compile and analyze how aviation heritage is supporting our current aerospace industry in the region and across the state.

In 2019, the National Aviation Heritage Area welcomed 1.4 million visitors and had a $226 million economic impact on the region per TourismOhio. While the overall economic impact of the collective Heritage Area creates additional jobs in the region, NAHA which seeks federal reauthorization will stay at 2 FTE for the foreseeable future. Previous economic models indicate that NAHA indirectly creates 50-100 tourism and hospitality jobs in the region.
