3. Short description The Urbana Youth Center (UYC) is a critically needed endeavor to reverse the current trends of declining opportunities for the youth (6-12K) of our community. UYC is an afterschool safe haven offering more than 200 children mentoring, tutoring, fun activities, and most importantly, healthy nutrition. With 1 in 3 Urbana area children living in poverty and 1,155 (53%) classified as disadvantaged, our youth desperately need supplemental education, counseling, life skills and job preparation.

33. Other sources of funds We have just begun requesting funding for this project. Currently we have received $26,000 in grants from Bundy Baking Solutions and Walmart. We are also seeking additional funding from the Champaign County Memorial Foundation, the United Way and the Bridges Community Action Partnership.

In-kind donations have included $9,500 from TrueChat Inc. for video production, literature development, website development, and marketing services.
In-kind contributions of $2,500 for consulting for program development.
In-kind contributions of $5,250 for consulting on business development, planning, volunteer recruitment and internal system development.

40. Community Need The mission of our parent foundation, GrandWorks is to Reach, Restore and Revive our community and there is no better place to start than with our children as they are our future.

With 1 in 3 Urbana area children living in poverty and 1,155 (53%) classified as disadvantaged, our youth desperately need supplemental education, counseling, life skills and job preparation.

UYC’s comprehensive approach provides a volunteer team of professionals to monitor and encourage kids in programs that prepare them with opportunities to network and find good jobs. Working cooperatively with the city school system, the UYC curriculum includes science, technology, engineering, math and arts initiatives. Additionally, UYC offers leadership and business programs, mental health resources, fun social activities and healthy meals.

1. The number of students placed in local jobs. Currently the majority of our youth leave the community, seeking opportunities elsewhere. In providing them with enhanced education and life skills, they will also be better informed about the opportunities that exist here. We need to keep our youth in the area as they pursue their careers and raise families, which will in turn help to revive our community.
