Learning on the Go with Justin Farmer

Events:

December 1, mailed 50 Holiday Gifts/Cards to North American Site Selection Consultants
December 2-4, Chicago Mid-American Economic Development Council (MAEDC)
December 5, Chicago meetings with International Consulates and Chambers
December 9-11, Atlanta Site Selection Consultant Market Visit
December 12, Greenville, SC Site Selection Consultant Market Visit

Why were you there?

The MAEDC event offers professional development learning opportunities, sharing of best practices, and networking with invited Site Selection Consultants. This year, DDC was a sponsor of the event, allowing a booth display and access to sponsor only networking events with the Site Selection Consultants. It was also a pleasure to support our LEDO, Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, who was presenting at the conference on their recent successes and workforce initiatives. DDC was able to meet with (8) Site Selection Consultants during this event.

Making the most of this visit to Chicago, our DDC team along with Horton Hobbs also visited the following entities: British Consulate General, German American Chamber of Commerce, Consulate General of France, Trade Commission of Spain, and the Quebec Government Office. This was a great opportunity to share the recent successes of the Dayton Region and learn about their areas of focus. This proved very rewarding with potential to host delegations from each country and partnership on events that align with targeted industry sectors.

Market visits are an extremely important aspect of Economic Development organizations, allowing us to partner with our LEDOs on visits to deliver a regional and local message directly to Site Selection Consultants. In this instance, our team (Justin Farmer, Brad Vath, Horton Hobbs) visited Atlanta, GA and Greenville, SC with both areas having a strong concentration of Site Selection Consultants. Our group enjoyed meeting with four consultants from Atlanta and four from Greenville, providing insight to the Dayton Region’s recent successes as well as our assets and resources.

Who did you meet?

December proved to be very successful as our DDC and LEDO teams were able to connect with 20 different organizations that represent companies looking to expand or start operations in the United States. Along with this, the DDC sent an Airstream themed Holiday Gift and Card to 50 Site Selection Consultants, making note of the 2018 Airstream expansion in the Village of Jackson Center.

Top 3 things you learned:

  1. A MAEDC panelist believes there is room for consolidation within the Automotive Industry.  The recent GM announcement, while unfavorable, could position them for greater future success with Autonomy and Electric Vehicles.
  2. Due to autonomous vehicles, implementation of micro data centers could see a significant increase.
  3. The applicability of New Market Tax credits is much more diverse than our team understood. These tax credits can be used for non-profits, healthcare, and supporting companies investment in M&E.
