Girl Scout Camp Accessibility
Girl Scouts of Western Ohio serves over 11,000 girls in 13 of the 14 counties in Miami Valley. In 2023, almost 2,500 of these girls joined us for day camp, overnight camp and troop outings at one of our three Warren County camps. This project would improve access to our camps for girls and volunteers with disabilities, including, mobility challenges, visual impairment and self-care. Money would be used for upgrades to tent units and areas, bathrooms, signage and lodges.

Construction or Capital
Yes
Girl Scouts of Western Ohio would ask for $100,000 of board restricted funds to be used for these capital projects. In addition, GSWO has identified 20 community foundations with mutual interest in providing increased accessibility in Warren and Defiance Counties to apply for funding within the next year. Of these we have previously received funding or have a relationship with 13 of these funders. We will begin conversations with these potential funders in November 2023 and begin to apply for funds in Dec 2023. We will also lobby for a federal earmark in the upcoming budget cycle.

In addition, we have over 800 individuals in our donor database who have made a donation in the past 2 years to solicit for additional matching funds and have identified individual donors with philanthropic interests in individuals with disabilities.

Community Details
Over 11,000 Miami Valley girls participate in Girl Scouts, supported by 4,300 caring adults. We know that when girls participate in a variety of Girl Scout activities, including outdoor activities, they are more likely to remain in Girl Scouts and achieve our key leadership outcomes. According to research from the Girl Scout Research Institute, Girl Scout outdoor activities help girls learn about nature, access activities they would have never done before and help girls learn how to care for the environment. In 2023, almost 2,500 girls from the Miami Valley area attended one of our camps, either during summer camp or with their troops throughout the year. Hundreds more attended a program event, such as archery, hiking or canoeing at our camps. The great news is that our camp usage continues to increase - our summer 2023 camp attendance was 35% higher than in 2022.

Currently, our camp properties are ADA compliant, but this minimum standard of compliance does not allow girls and volunteers with ambulatory, self-care and visual disabilities to take advantage of a robust camp experience that includes tent camping, lodge camping and recreational activities.

GSWO is committed to ensuring that all girls and volunteers have the ability to participate in Girl Scouts. Every adult in our community, who agrees to the Girl Scout Promise and Law and passes a background check, is welcome to become a Girl Scout; in addition, all girls in our community are welcome to participate. The US census indicates that 14.4% of the Ohio population lives with a disability, including 7.3% with an ambulatory disability, 2.5% with a self-care disability and 2.4% with a vision impairment. Among children 5-17 in Ohio, 130,000 Ohio children live with a disability.

These improvements would ensure that current Girl Scout girls and volunteers who live with these disabilities can fully access outdoor Girl Scout spaces. With these changes, we would also expect girls and adults who are not yet Girl Scouts, but also live with ambulatory, visual and self-care disabilities may consider Girl Scouts as a place where they belong.
Girl Scouts of Western Ohio has not received earmarked funding in the past.
