City of Centerville School Safety Access – Dimco Way Extension
The City of Centerville School Safety Access – Dimco Way Extension is vitally important to the City of Centerville and the Centerville School District. This project would relieve congestion in the High School parking lot; create a safer point of access for the students, staff, and community; increase pedestrian safety; and provide a secondary connector from Centerville High School to a major arterial road.

The City of Centerville will contribute City funds from our capital improvement project (CIP) budget and pursue other sources of funds. The City has already funded and completed the design for the project by expending over $200,000 in local funds between 2022-2023 to complete the planning and design work. The City’s draft five-year CIP budget includes $2,000,000 in fiscal year 2024 towards the construction of this project. This draft CIP budget is expected to be officially adopted by City Council in late 2023.

Community Details
Centerville High School houses more than 3,000 students and staff members. It is only served by one major arterial roadway, East Franklin Street, which has an average annual daily traffic count of 6,300 vehicles.

The Centerville School Safety Access - Dimco Way Extension project would increase public safety access to the High School and reduce vehicular traffic. This extension would relieve congestion in the high school’s parking lot; create a safer point of access for our students, staff, and community; increase pedestrian safety; and provide a secondary link from our campus to a major arterial road.

Additionally, by providing this secondary access to a major arterial road, it is expected to relieve vehicular traffic on East Franklin Street. East Franklin Street backs up during times of school arrival and dismissal, creating a bottleneck in the City’s transportation system such that vehicles at the intersections of Main Street at East Franklin and Clyo at East Franklin experience a significant delay. This new access is expected to remove approximately half the vehicles from the East Franklin School entrance/exit, significantly reducing the delay.

The Centerville School District has partnered with the City of Centerville to conduct this School Safety Access Project. The school has agreed to dedicate the necessary permanent and temporary Right-of-Way to conduct the approximately 2,000-foot roadway extension. This extension would ultimately provide a second access point for the school on a major arterial roadway, Clyo Road. The City has additionally committed funds to conduct a future widening of Clyo Road with intersection improvements to handle the additional vehicular traffic.
