3. Short description Investment casting process requires a substantial amount of preparation and specialized equipment that leads to long lead times and supply chain issues. The proposed project uses laser powder bed fusion patterns and reservoirs to eliminate pattern injection, ejection, tree assembly, and the pattern bake-out steps of investment casting.

Other sources of funds This project is expected to gather enough results to secure interest from industry and that will allow for a direct to Phase II SBIR funding from Department of the Air Force in the amount of $1.25M. to support the Phase II work, the team also expects to leverage the TACFI program through the Air Force for the amount of $750k.

40. Community Need This work will impact the community by making the Dayton a hub for the modernization of investment casting, which is a $16.5B global industry and a $3.5B industry in Aerospace and Defense technology.

With an expert and a qualified apprentice at each stage of the process (design, printing, casting, aerospace), a small operation could sustain 7-8 jobs. slightly increasing the claim for the market in 2 years would at least double the jobs needed for the activities.
