Community Details
Our community deserves the opportunity for a world-class cultural and education center. Wild Hearts African Farm just proudly became the first and only Humane Certified™ zoo in Ohio. This achievement signals to visitors, partners and our community that they can be rest assured that Wild Hearts is providing topnotch care to our animals and that we are among the finest zoos in the world in achieving this honor. Wild Hearts would like to continue our track record of excellence by developing our property into a center where not only the community can assemble for education and recreation experiences, but as a seedbed for economic growth. We also recognize that many children do not have the opportunity to spend time outdoors or develop STEM role models in environmental professions. We know that by providing children access to other cultures and career paths we can inspire a world of more belonging. We can lessen the obstacles for children by providing them with opportunities that resonate with their curiosity and future career goals. We want to INSPIRE the next generation to value different cultures, conserve our environment and develop healthy lifestyles by being outdoors.
This project’s location addresses our community’s need for accessible and inclusive educational and recreational experiences for people and organizations that either cannot afford to travel into a larger city to visit zoos or cultural centers, and/or has limited time constraints for outings. Our region is home to many low-income families, home-school, day-hab centers, disabled and elderly citizens, nursing homes, head-start and day care programs that require activities to take place in a short time frame. Our location offers a solution to this problem. Currently operating on only about 4-acres of our 31-acre property, the Education Center will allow us to grow and address these needs including employment and economic development that would enhance the quality of life in Preble County and the entire region.
- Visitor attendance reaching county population of 44k+ within 5 years.
- Participation growth in education programs offered during and after school hours.
- Increase in outreach program bookings throughout the region by 25% within first 3 years.
- Overall increase in staffing from currently 0 paid employees to 11+ in the next year.
- Increase internship and volunteer opportunities by 50%.

We plan to hire seasonal/permanent staff for the new Education Center farm expansion. As an agritourism farm, we expect to staff for hospitality, tour guides, administration, managers, maintenance, farm staff, educators, and admissions. A similar project is the well-established Young's Jersey Dairy about 40 miles east in Springfield, Ohio. According to their website, they employ 320 farm and restaurant workers seasonally and receive over 1 million visitors per year. About 80 of those workers are year-round staff. By our 10th year, we expect to become the area's go-to facility for many student's summer and holiday employment. Many secondary jobs will be created through the project’s construction phases as well as agriculturally-related jobs involving livestock supplies. Wild Hearts just became the first AmeriCorps Site in Preble County. This expansion would create all new jobs including paid AmeriCorps positions. If we are not funded, we would not be able to meet our demand and expand.

To our knowledge our project has very strong support by the majority of our community including the mayors and Chambers of Commerce of both Lewisburg and Brookville, Lewisburg municipal manager, the Farm Bureau, Preble Soil & Water Conservation District, numerous surrounding businesses, neighbors and customers, and those who want to improve the economic growth of our community. We have attached support letters from several agencies in Q.54
Although this project is within complete compliance with all local and state laws, as with many new projects there are a few residential neighbors that have voiced opposition in the past due to their concerns about change. We anticipate that the positive benefits we will bring to the community will ease their concerns over time and we welcome anyone with questions to arrange for a friendly informational tour.
